Description
Students demonstrate the ability to work with parents and children, interdisciplinary teams of professionals and children with varying abilities and culturally diverse family systems. Students produce a capstone project, the Teacher Performance Assessment (EdTPA), in which planning, teaching, and assessment are described and analyzed. The project is nationally scored; failure to submit the EdTPA will result in a failing grade for the course. Take remaining OAE test(s).

Course Materials

No textbook required. 

You will be using the edTPA handbooks and materials which are posted on Blackboard.

You will need a 20GB flash drive.

Instructor's Course Objectives

Teacher candidates will:

  1. Know the subject matter in which they are seeking licensure and demonstrate understanding of the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structure of the discipline they teach.
  2. Know how students learn and develop asn d provide multiple appropriate learning opportunitities that meet the individual needs and challenge all learners.
  3. Know how students differ in their approaches to learning and create instructional opportunities that are equitable and adaptable to diverse learners.
  4. Plan and implement effective instruction, employing multiple strategies based on knowledge of subject matter, students, the community, curriculum goals, and state standards.
  5. Create and maintain a supportive learning environment including positive discipline.
  6. Use assessment tro provide students and families with feedback and to inform and improve practice.
  7. Use technology to support instruction.
  8. Use skills in communication, conflict resolution, problem solving, and teaching to create peaceful, productive classrooms.

Apr. 15Required Modules are due on Blackboard! Submit your certificates of completion to show you have done them. Deadline to have your flash drive turned in to us in the Education Office with your edTPA submission, SLO chart, etc. on it as well.
Apr. 28Education Graduation Reception for May graduates - please feel free to invite your cooperating teacher to the reception. It will be held from 4-6pm in the McCoy Room (in Kelly Center). Light refreshments will be provided and there will be a short program at the beginning of the reception. 

 

Course Assignments

Class Assignments/Requirements to Pass Student Teaching

  • Positive evaluations of student teaching as indicated by CPAST
  • Completion and uploading of edTPA by 11:59pm Pacific Time (2:59AM EST) on Apr. 2, 2026 is REQUIRED. A particular score is NOT required. A score of 37 or higher means that the State Board of Education (state office responsible for teacher licenses) will accept the edTPA in lieu of the OAE Assessment of Professional Knowledge. You MUST give us a copy of all of your edTPA submissions on a USB flash drive. Included must be a pre- and a post-test for the 3-5 lessons and a SLOs chart indicating the number of students who exceeded expectations, met expectations, and did not meet expectations, as well as all items you uploaded to the edTPA/Pearson website. If the edTPA is not uploaded by the deadline or the flash drive is not turned in, you will NOT pass student teaching.
  • Certificates of completion are required for all required modules.
  • Log of daily hours at site in Student Learning & Licensure (SLL  - Watermark) with approval from cooperating teacher.
  • Teacher candidates will also meet all requirements according to the student teaching handbook and meet all expectations on their final teaching evaluations from their cooperating teacher and site supervisor and be recommended for a "P" by the site supervisor and student teaching seminar instructors.

This is a Pass/Fail course. To earn a "P" you must complete the class assignments and requirements as outlined in that section.

Instructor's Course Attendance Policy

Seminar Attendance

We will meet each week. Attendance is expected and required; it will be taken at every class. YOU CANNOT PASS SEMINAR WITHOUT REGULAR ATTENDANCE. Seminar attendance is mandatory. Schools have been notified of the time/day of seminar and have granted permission for teacher candidates to leave and be able to attend. Please be advised that THIS attendance policy pertains ONLY to seminar. If a teacher candidate must miss seminar, you must inform the instructor beforehand.

  • Two partial absences equal one full absence.
  • Be on time to Seminar!
  • To pass this class, teacher candidates will have not more than 1 absence during a semester. Acceptable reasons for absence include:
    • Activities in which teacher candidates act as a college representative (musical performance, field trip for another class, etc.) or are performing extended day teaching-related (pare teacher conferences, etc.) activities.
    • Personal illness as documented with written proof from the school nurse or a physician.
    • Family or personal emergencies (death of a family member, accident, or other hardship).
    • Severe weather as determined by Wilmington College (not the school district)

Institutional and Program-Level Policies

Final Exam Schedule

All exams will follow the Final Exam Schedule. Students scheduled to take three or more final examinations on one day may request to arrange their examination schedule, so no more than two exams occur on one day.
Requests for early or late exams are considered only under extreme circumstances. Prior to the exam period, the student must file a written request on the Early/Late Exam Form available in the Student One Stop Center, Academic Records, and on the WC portal. The form must be signed by the Instructor and the Academic Dean, approving the alternate exam time. This process must be completed prior to the scheduled exam period.

Out-of-class Work Expectation

A minimum of 2 hours of out-of-class student work is expected for each hour of in-class time for traditional face-to-face courses. For online and hybrid courses, the combination of face-to-face time and out-of-class work should be equal to 3 hours per credit hour per week.
